We are increasing tree canopy and biodiversity plantings at the Freeway Golf Course.

The plan to increase tree canopy and biodiversity plantings at the Freeway Golf Course is complete, and we have begun implementation. A mix of 104 indigenous trees and 4500 native plants and shrubs have been planted across the course to transform spaces around tees and greens into environmental zones that encourage wildlife.

The benefits of tree canopy cover in urban areas are well documented. These benefits include:

  • Reducing the impact of the urban heat island effect
  • Reducing the effects of climate change
  • Reducing temperatures in and around buildings
  • Reducing storm water runoff
  • Absorbing pollution
  • Providing habitat and promoting biodiversity

Develop a plan to increase tree canopy and biodiversity plantings over a two hectare area of the Freeway Golf Course and begin implementation of that plan.

    Tree canopy and biodiversity plantings

    A mix of 104 indigenous trees and 4500 native plants and shrubs have been planted across the course to transform spaces around tees and greens (1st tee, 2nd tee, 4th green, 18th green and 10th tee) into environmental zones that encourage wildlife.

    An educational garden out the front of the proshop has also been completed.

    A forest mulcher has regenerated an area that had lots of tree debris, overgrown long grass and black berry. The outcome has been opening up the area so that golfers can walk down over a fine mulch to the once hidden billabong
