New ESD position will bring advice and support.

Description

Council administers the Boroondara Planning Scheme, which sets out state government policy guidance for sustainable development. In 2022, Council hired a new ESD Officer to help assess planning permit applications for multi-unit developments in accordance with the requirements of the State Planning Policy Framework.

Council uses tools such as Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) to help assess Environmentally Sustainable Design Reports submitted with planning applications.

At present, Boroondara Council does not have a specific ESD policy within the Boroondara Planning Scheme, but we have been working with other Councils as part of the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment (CASBE) Elevating Targets program to introduce planning policy that elevates sustainability requirements for new buildings and encourages a move towards net zero carbon development.

Official description
